Trump favoriet op Polymarket, maar klopt dat beeld wel?
Op Polymarket, een platform voor voorspellingen, heeft Donald Trump momenteel de hoogste kans om de Amerikaanse presidentsverkiezingen van 2024 te winnen, met een voorspelde kans van 63,7%. Dit staat echter haaks op de uitkomsten van veel peilingen. Er wordt nu onderzoek gedaan naar wie deze grote weddenschappen plaatst en of alles wel eerlijk verloopt.
Strengere controles op Polymarket
Polymarket is begonnen met het hercontroleren van de gebruikers op hun platform, vooral de mensen die grote bedragen inzetten. Dit komt doordat Amerikanen officieel niet mogen deelnemen aan het platform. Er zijn zorgen dat sommige Amerikaanse gebruikers dit verbod omzeilen door gebruik te maken van VPN’s.
Tot nu toe is er bijna 2,3 miljard dollar ingezet op de uitkomst van de Amerikaanse presidentsverkiezingen. Het lijkt erop dat een paar grote spelers, ook wel ‘whales’ genoemd, de kansen op een overwinning van Trump beïnvloeden.
Grote spelers en buitenlandse invloed
Een opvallende gebruiker, onder de naam “Fredi9999”, heeft al meer dan 20 miljoen dollar ingezet op een Republikeinse winst. Dit soort enorme bedragen roept vragen op over hoe eerlijk de markt is, vooral omdat het meeste geld van buiten de VS komt. Ook op een concurrerend platform, Kalshi, ligt Trump voor op Kamala Harris, met een voorsprong van 60%.
Billionair en investeerder in Polymarket, Mark Cuban, benadrukt dat veel van de weddenschappen op Polymarket uit het buitenland komen. Volgens hem geeft dit geen eerlijk beeld van wat Amerikaanse kiezers daadwerkelijk willen.
“Het meeste geld op Polymarket komt uit het buitenland, dus dit is geen goede voorspeller van de verkiezingsuitslag,” zei Cuban in een interview.
Problemen met de Amerikaanse overheid
Polymarket heeft eerder al problemen gehad met de Amerikaanse toezichthouder, de Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). In 2022 moest het platform 1,4 miljoen dollar betalen wegens het aanbieden van markten zonder de juiste vergunningen. Ook Kalshi heeft te maken met juridische kwesties, waarbij de CFTC deels een rechtszaak verloor over het sluiten van verkiezingsmarkten.
Hoewel de inzetten op platforms zoals Polymarket hoog zijn, blijft de vraag of ze een realistische afspiegeling zijn van de verkiezingsdynamiek. Buitenlandse invloed lijkt een grote rol te spelen, wat betekent dat de voorspellingen niet noodzakelijk overeenkomen met wat er in het stemhokje zal gebeuren.
