Appchains: Waarom Andre Cronje kritisch is over deze technologie
Andre Cronje, mede-oprichter van Sonic Labs, heeft stevige kritiek geuit op appchains, blockchains die speciaal zijn ontwikkeld voor gedecentraliseerde applicaties (DApps). Volgens Cronje lopen deze op maat gemaakte blockchains tegen serieuze uitdagingen aan die hun brede adoptie in de weg staan.
Te hoge kosten en weinig ondersteuning
Een van Cronje’s grootste zorgen gaat over de kosten die komen kijken bij het opzetten en onderhouden van appchains. Hij deelde dat zijn eigen team dit jaar al $14 miljoen heeft uitgegeven aan infrastructuur, waaronder kosten voor regelgeving en orakels. Deze uitgaven maken het volgens hem moeilijk voor ontwikkelaars om zich te richten op wat echt belangrijk is: het bouwen van hun applicaties en het bedienen van hun gebruikers.
Hilmar Orth van Gelato Network ziet dit anders. Hij benadrukt dat er tegenwoordig veel oplossingen beschikbaar zijn via rollup-as-a-service (RaaS)-aanbieders, waardoor ontwikkelaars geen volledige infrastructuur meer vanaf de grond hoeven op te zetten.
Liquiditeit blijft een uitdaging
Cronje maakt zich ook zorgen over de verdeling van liquiditeit bij appchains. Hij zegt dat deze ketens vaak afhankelijk zijn van bruggen, die kwetsbaar kunnen zijn voor aanvallen. Dit kan leiden tot een risico op centralisatie en kan de veiligheid van het netwerk in gevaar brengen.
Marc Boiron van Polygon Labs ziet echter hoop in nieuwe technologieën zoals het AggLayer, dat belooft de fragmentatie van liquiditeit te verminderen door verschillende appchains met elkaar te verbinden.
Gemeenschap en netwerk-effecten
Een ander probleem volgens Cronje is dat appchains niet profiteren van een sterk netwerk-effect. Hij vindt dat er te weinig gebruikers en ontwikkelaars zijn om een levendige gemeenschap te vormen, iets wat essentieel is voor de groei van een blockchain-ecosysteem.
Toch ziet Boiron dit anders en benadrukt dat er wel degelijk een groeiende groep enthousiaste gebruikers en bouwers is, vooral binnen projecten zoals AggLayer.
Hilmar Orth is wat realistischer. Volgens hem concurreren ontwikkelaars vaker met elkaar om gebruikers dan dat ze als een hechte gemeenschap samenwerken.
Appchains: Potentieel of valkuil?
De discussie over de toekomst van appchains blijft de gemoederen bezighouden. Waar Cronje vooral wijst op de obstakels, zijn anderen optimistisch over nieuwe oplossingen die deze problemen kunnen aanpakken. Wat duidelijk is, is dat de technologie nog in ontwikkeling is en dat er nog veel vraagstukken op tafel liggen voordat appchains op grote schaal geadopteerd worden.
