Northern Trust start platform voor digitale handel in koolstofkredieten
Northern Trust heeft een nieuw platform gelanceerd voor de handel in digitale koolstofkredieten. Dit platform, genaamd Northern Trust Carbon Ecosystem, maakt het mogelijk om koolstofkredieten te verhandelen, beheren en uit de markt te halen binnen de vrijwillige koolstofmarkt. Hiermee zet Northern Trust een belangrijke stap in het ondersteunen van duurzame projecten.
Volledige levenscyclus van koolstofkredieten
Met het nieuwe platform kan Northern Trust elke stap in de levenscyclus van een koolstofkrediet beheren, van uitgifte tot rapportage. Een koolstofkrediet vertegenwoordigt de vermindering of verwijdering van een ton CO2-uitstoot. Deze credits worden verhandeld voor fiatvaluta en vervolgens ‘geretireerd’ via slimme contracten op een private blockchain. Zo worden ze definitief uit de markt gehaald.
Het Northern Trust Carbon Ecosystem werd in september 2023 getest met een eerste versie, waarbij twee projectontwikkelaars en drie kopers betrokken waren. De volledige versie van het platform ondersteunt inmiddels meer deelnemers, waaronder Northern Trust zelf als koper.
Blockchain en slimme contracten
Blockchain speelt een belangrijke rol in dit ecosysteem. Het gebruik van slimme contracten maakt de handel in koolstofkredieten snel en veilig. Justin Chapman, hoofd van Northern Trust Digital Assets, benadrukt dat dit platform slechts één van de vele toepassingen is die het bedrijf voor ogen heeft voor zijn Matrix Zenith-platform. Het combineert traditionele en digitale activa op een slimme manier.
De eerste verkopers op het platform waren Water Recovery Systems uit het VK en CUT Carbon Distributed Technologies uit Lichtenstein. CUT introduceerde in juni 2023 hun eigen Carbon Utility Token (CUT) om de handel in tokenized koolstofkredieten te vergemakkelijken.

Northern Trust heeft al jaren ervaring met blockchainprojecten en is mede-oprichter van Zodia Custody. Het bedrijf werkt actief samen met andere partijen, zoals PwC en SWIFT, om blockchainoplossingen in de financiële sector verder te ontwikkelen. Dit nieuwe platform benadrukt hun inzet voor duurzaamheid en innovatie.
