VanEck stopt met Ethereum futures-ETF vanwege lage vraag
VanEck, een bekende vermogensbeheerder, trekt de stekker uit zijn futures-gebaseerde Ethereum ETF. Dit komt door de toenemende populariteit van spot-ETF’s voor cryptocurrencies, die de vraag naar futures-ETF’s sterk hebben verminderd. Op 6 september maakte VanEck bekend dat het fonds op 16 september stopt met handelen, en dat de investeerders hun geld rond 23 september terugkrijgen.
Volgens VanEck zijn de prestaties, liquiditeit en het beperkte beheerd vermogen van ongeveer $21 miljoen de belangrijkste redenen voor de sluiting. Ter vergelijking: hun spot Ethereum ETF, die in juni werd gelanceerd, heeft inmiddels meer dan $55 miljoen onder beheer.
De sluiting was voor velen te verwachten. Nate Geraci, president van The ETF Store, merkte op dat de opkomst van spot-ETF’s de futures-ETF’s overbodig zou maken.
“Waarschijnlijk zag VanEck dit vooral als een marketingstrategie,” aldus Geraci op X (voorheen Twitter).

Spot Ether-ETF’s kregen in juli groen licht van de Amerikaanse Securities and Exchange Commission. Deze fondsen beheren nu samen zo’n $6,5 miljard, terwijl futures-gebaseerde Ethereum ETF’s ver achterblijven met minder dan $170 miljoen. De Grayscale Ethereum Trust, de grootste in zijn soort, beheert bijna $4,2 miljard aan activa.
Het verschil in populariteit komt doordat futures-contracten regelmatig moeten worden vernieuwd, wat extra kosten met zich meebrengt. Spot-ETF’s hebben dit probleem niet en presteren daardoor vaak beter. In 2024 behoorden crypto-ETF’s tot de populairste nieuwe ETF’s, met een groot aantal investeerders dat instapte.
