Waarom VC’s Voorzichtig Zijn Met Crypto-Investeringen
De cryptowereld, waar Bitcoin en Ethereum regelmatig hoge rendementen opleveren, heeft ervoor gezorgd dat venture capitalists (VC’s) voorzichtiger te werk gaan dan in andere sectoren. Adam Cochran, partner bij Cinneamhain Ventures, licht toe waarom de investeringen in crypto de laatste tijd zijn vertraagd.
Stabiele winsten met Bitcoin en Ethereum
Bitcoin en Ethereum bieden VC’s een zekere basis, met rendementen die ver boven de traditionele markten uitstijgen. Deze zekerheid maakt dat VC’s minder geneigd zijn om vroeg in opkomende crypto-startups te stappen, zoals ze dat in andere industrieën wel doen. Cochran wijst erop dat Bitcoin de afgelopen tien jaar een gemiddeld jaarlijks rendement van 60% heeft behaald, vergeleken met de S&P 500 die op 13,20% bleef steken.
Focus op bewezen trends
In plaats van risico’s te nemen met nieuwe, onbekende projecten, richten VC’s zich op trends die al succesvol zijn gebleken. Tijdens de afgelopen cryptocyclus hebben ze vooral geïnvesteerd in technologieën zoals NFT’s en DeFi, die al momentum hadden. Nu deze trends hun piek hebben bereikt, is het onduidelijk welke richting de markt op zal gaan.
Voorzichtige investeringen ondanks groei
Ondanks de terughoudendheid zijn de investeringen in crypto door VC’s in 2024 toch toegenomen, met enkele maanden waarin meer dan $1 miljard werd geïnvesteerd. Dit is een groei vergeleken met 2023, maar nog steeds aanzienlijk lager dan de piek in 2022.
Het vermijden van risico’s
Cochran stelt dat veel VC’s zich profileren als crypto-experts, maar in werkelijkheid vooral mikken op veilige en bewezen trends. Ze willen geen grote risico’s nemen op projecten die nog geen succes hebben laten zien.
Deze terughoudendheid toont aan dat VC’s hun strategie aanpassen aan de volatiliteit van de cryptomarkt, en zich focussen op duurzame investeringen die hun kapitaal beschermen.
